Dariusz Kołodziejczyk Fund

Dear colleagues,

Dariusz Kołodziejczyk is a professor of Early Modern History at the University of Warsaw in Poland. Dariusz worked throughout his career on Ottoman-Polish history, published five books (three of which were in English; you can find a list here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dariusz_Kołodziejczyk) and many articles, and touched the lives of many students and scholars of Ottoman history. Most recently, he acted as the director of CIÉPO (Comite international d’études pre-ottomanes et ottomanes) and was preparing for this year’s conference in September in Thessaloniki.

After spending the fall quarter of 2021 at Stanford as a visiting scholar, Dariusz returned to Poland. In January, he suffered a severe stroke with a further massive cerebral hemorrhage. He was in a coma for over a month, on a ventilator and the doctors did not give him big chances of survival. Despite all this, Dariusz pulled through the worst. Currently, he is breathing on his own, he is conscious and making contact. He has started to eat, can read simple sentences with understanding, understands spoken language well and got better in counting (now he can add and subtract to 20).

Nevertheless, he is partly paralyzed and suffers from aphasia; his condition is still considered severe. After three months spent in the hospital, Dariusz was moved to a rehabilitation institution as he still requires medical assistance 24/7. Dariusz is making progress in overall health, strength and physical as well as cognitive ability. He is under regular care of a rehabilitation therapist and speech therapist.

Dariusz’s wife Zosia is acting as his primary care organizer and the sole provider for the family. She is supporting their 14-year-old son, Szymon, on a teacher’s salary. Considering the costs of medical help, rehabilitation and consultations for Dariusz in years to come, the family needs financial support.

Zosia set up an account in Poland with the help of a foundation, Fundacja Aktywnej Rehabilitacji (Foundation for Active Rehabilitation), which helps people in Dariusz’s condition by assisting families in costs of therapy. Such foundations thrive thanks to endowments of family, friends, and all those with big hearts who wish to help. Following Zosia’s lead and wishes, we set up this donation account for friends of Dariusz to donate in the US. All the proceeds will go directly to Zosia and Szymon Kołodziejczyk and be used to support Dariusz’s treatment and rehabilitation costs.

We will be immensely grateful for the funds you can spare, which you can donate with a credit card by clicking on the following link:
